How this is calculated

Dry matter intake = body weight × 2.7% for lactating buffalo (nili-ravi / kundi). Silage supplies 50% of that dry matter. As-fed weight = silage dry matter ÷ (dry matter % ÷ 100).

These are planning figures, not guarantees — real intake varies with body condition, stage of lactation, ration composition, forage quality and heat load. Treat the result as a purchasing estimate and confirm the ration with your own nutritionist.

Why buffalo need their own numbers

Pakistan's dairy herd is buffalo-dominant — Nili-Ravi and Kundi rather than Holstein — and buffalo differ from cattle in both digestion and intake. Applying a Holstein intake figure to a buffalo herd will misestimate your requirement, and at scale that means either running short mid-season or paying to store silage you did not need.

The calculator uses dry matter intake as a percentage of body weight, which is the standard way ruminant intake is estimated, then converts back to an as-fed quantity using the dry matter percentage of the silage itself. Both steps are shown on screen so the arithmetic is checkable.

Using it to compare suppliers

Change only the dry matter figure and watch the required tonnage move. That is the single most useful thing this tool demonstrates: two loads quoted at the same price per tonne are not the same purchase if one is materially wetter than the other. Always ask a supplier for the dry matter percentage before comparing prices.

Common questions

How much silage does a buffalo eat per day?
A lactating buffalo typically consumes dry matter equal to roughly 2.5–3% of its body weight per day across the whole ration. Where silage supplies about half of that dry matter, a 500 kg buffalo works out near 20–25 kg of as-fed silage daily at 32% dry matter. Actual intake varies with stage of lactation, body condition, ration composition and heat load.
Why does dry matter percentage change how much silage I need?
Silage is sold by weight as fed, but animals eat dry matter. Wetter silage means you are buying more water per tonne, so you need more tonnes to deliver the same nutrition. That is why comparing two suppliers on price per tonne alone is misleading unless you also compare dry matter.
How many bales are in a 40ft container?
It depends on bale weight and dimensions, and containers usually reach their weight limit before they run out of space with a dense product like silage. A common planning figure is around 27 tonnes of payload for a 40ft high cube, but you should confirm the exact bale count with the supplier before pricing a shipment.
